About Horley Local History Society (HLHS)
Founded on 4th March 1952, the Horley Local History Society aims to foster interest in the rich history of Horley and its surrounding areas.
With over 180 members (as of November 2025), we welcome everyone, from those pursuing in-depth research and publication to those who simply enjoy our monthly talks and social activities.
Meetings & Events
We hold regular meetings featuring guest speakers on topics relating to local and general history.
- Current Venue (until Aug 2026): Horley Community Centre, Regent Hall, Albert Road, RH6 7JA.
- Time: 4th Tuesday of each month (except July & August) at 7:30 PM for an 8:00 PM start.
- Upcoming Change: Effective September 2026, we will move to Hookwood Memorial Hall, Withey Meadows, Hookwood, RH6 0AZ, meeting on the 4th Thursday of each month.
- Visitors: Always welcome! Entry is £2 (refundable if you join on the night).
Local History Centre & Research
- Visit Us: Meet our volunteers at the Local History Centre inside Horley Public Library on Saturday mornings from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
- Research Help: We can assist with tracing the history of your house, road, or local area, and offer access to local and national family history resources.
- Support Needed: Our Tuesday afternoon sessions (2:00–4:00 PM) are currently suspended due to a lack of volunteers, but we hope to resume them at some time in the future.
Membership & Publications
- Join Us: Subscription rates are £10.00 for individuals or £15.00 for family membership (same address). Join via the ‘About HLHS’ dropdown menu above.
- Publications: We have published many books and booklets on local history which are available for purchase via ebay.
- Gallery: Explore photos of old streets, schools, shops, and flooding in our online Photo Gallery.
